Southampton have sacked vice chairman Les Reed, with the club 16th in the Premier League after seven games without a win.
Reed has been employed by Southampton in a variety of roles since 2010 but has paid the price for a poor start to the season, in which they have scored just twice since September.
Saints were thrashed 6-1 at Manchester City last Sunday to increase the pressure on manager Mark Hughes, who led the club to safety last term.
Reed s departure was confirmed in a statement released by the club on Thursday, in which they stressed the importance of a change that will provide new drive and direction to our football operations team and enable them to get results back on track .

Aston Villa are interested in signing Marcos Acuna from Sevilla in the summer transfer window, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Italian journalist has reported on Twitter that Acuna himself is open to a move to Villa Park and is keen on playing in the Premier League.
Romano has added that Lucas Digne could leave Everton this summer. There are clubs in the Saudi Pro League and two in Europe who want to secure the services of the 30-year-old France international left-back.

Lionel Messi reached another incredible landmark on Sunday as he scored his 400th LaLiga goal in Barcelona s game against Eibar at Camp Nou.
The Argentina international has had a remarkable impact on Spanish football since making his debut in the 2004-05 campaign, and he becomes the first player to reach 400 goals in LaLiga.
Having come through Barca s academy ranks and burst on to the scene as a teenager, Messi has gone from strength to strength and enjoyed astonishing levels of consistency in Spanish football.
Although his goals grab the headlines, he has shown himself to be so much more than just a goalscorer during his time in Barcelona, with his dribbling, passing and work rate making him arguably the perfect footballer.
Much of his career has been d…
Michael Carrick insists he is not thinking about a reunion with Cristiano Ronaldo following suggestions the Portugal great is keen on a return to Manchester United.
Ronaldo, Madrid s record goalscorer, only signed a new five-year-deal last November, but is reportedly seeking to leave the Spanish capital following accusations he defrauded Spanish tax authorities out of €14.7million – a claim he strenuously denies.
The 32-year-old is reported to view a return to United as his favoured option if he does depart the Santiago Bernabeu, with Ronaldo winning three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups and the Champions League during a six-year stay at Old Trafford between 2003 and 2009.
Carrick was a team-mate of Ronaldo s during that spell, but the midfi…
Barcelona will aim to close the gap to the top two in LaLiga when they take on neighbours Girona on Sunday.
Barca are not just four points behind big rivals Real Madrid but also their fellow Catalans, who have been the surprise package of the season so far under head coach Michel.
But Xavi’s men go into the clash boosted by last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, with Joao Felix scoring the only goal against his parent club.
— FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona)
Xavi told reporters: “It will be a great match. Michel is a great coach and has a philosophy similar to ours. They want the ball and are very dynamic.
“We are looking at the game through several different scenarios because it can play out in different ways. I don’t …
Paris Saint-Germain thanked one of the greatest players in their history following the departure of Thiago Silva – though the defender is not expected to be without a club for too long.
The Brazil international moved to the French capital – along with Zlatan Ibrahimovic – from Serie A giants Milan in 2012.
Silva went on to make over 300 appearances and helped PSG win seven Ligue 1 titles, the Coupe de France five times and the Coupe de la Ligue on six occasions.
The 35-year-old s contract expired following PSG s 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League final on Sunday and the club have now officially confirmed his exit.
The centre-back seems set for the Premier League as Chelsea are expected to sign the free agent in the coming …
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema, according to the Daily Star.
The France international has been constantly linked with a move away from the Bernabeu over the past few years but has remained with the La Liga giants.
However owner Florentino Perez is planning a major overhaul of the teams attack next summer with Benzema one of the big names that could make way.
The twenty-nine year old managed nineteen goals in all competitions last season taking his tally to one hundred and eighty since signing from Lyon in the summer of 2009.
He is off the mark this season having netted in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup victory over Barcelona but is yet to score in the league.
Benzema has two league titles …
Brenden Aaronson and Daniel James struck either side of half-time to secure Leeds United s first win of the new season, beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 on Friday.
Aaronson notched his second league goal of the season early on, before James sealed the victory with a fine finish for his 30th goal involvement for the club.
The visitors started brightly at Hillsborough as Mateo Joseph was the first to test James Beadle inside the opening five minutes of the contest.
And their attacking persistence was rewarded in the 24th minute when Aaronson swept a left-footed effort home after Joseph had been fouled inside the penalty area.
Despite registering seven shots in the first 45 minutes, the visitors were unable to increase their advantage, but it didn t take …
He s been in football [a long time], he understands. It s not personal and I m sure he ll come back stronger and get an opportunity to manage another great club. Maybe one day he ll come back to us.
I m not going to sit here and analyse the past. It s not productive. Mauricio did a fantastic job for us, we are very grateful. I wish him all the best for the future.
I m still in contact with him. My relationship is very good with him. It just got to the point where it felt we needed a divorce.
Those are the words of Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy who has made it perfectly clear that he wouldn’t be surprised to see Mauricio Pochettino return to the club in some form in the future.
What kind of role that would be in, of course, is up …
Atletico Madrid eased into the second round of the Copa del Rey with a comfortable 3-0 victory over fourth-tier Cardassar.
Diego Simeone s side – who won the last of their 10 Copa del Rey titles in 2012-13 – crashed out in the round of 32 last season, losing 2-1 to minnows Cultural Leonesa.
They suffered no such embarrassment on this occasion, with the excellent Thomas Lemar putting them ahead following some impressive goalkeeping from Cardassar s Angel Pedro Sanchez Marin.
Ricard Sanchez got the second, Atleti s debutant right-back picking out the corner to put the visitors into a commanding lead, with Sime Vrsaljko on hand to wrap things up late on.
Atleti s early dominance would have told if not for Marin, who pulled off a superb double save…
